At least 10 people killed in Russian and Ukrainian attacks

Russia and Ukraine traded attacks on Saturday that officials on both sides said caused at least 10 deaths, even as the United States pushed to revive ceasefire talks. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian drones and missiles killed four people, including two women who died when their home collapsed in Zaporizhzhia after an overnight barrage, and two fatalities in the city of Sumy. Russian and Moscow-installed regional officials said Ukrainian strikes killed six people in Russia and Russian-occupied territory. Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev posted on Telegram that a Ukrainian drone strike in the southern region killed three people, wounded two and started fires at two industrial facilities; Russian media later named an oil refinery among the targets. Moscow-installed head Yevgeny Balitsky said three people were killed in the Russian-occupied part of Zaporizhzhia. Moscow’s Defence Ministry added that Russian forces struck a cargo vessel carrying military supplies near the Black Sea port of Odesa and hit a logistics hub in the Odesa region. Separately, Ukrainian forces have continued long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries and industrial sites; officials said attacks on refineries in Perm and Novoshakhtinsk temporarily halted operations. The violence came as diplomatic activity continued. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Washington had proposed a meeting of Russian, Ukrainian and US officials in the United Arab Emirates and that Ukraine was waiting for a date. Russian President Vladimir Putin said settlement proposals remained under consideration and that Moscow could return to talks after recent parliamentary elections. In remarks to the United Nations General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Europe of trying to thwart peace negotiations and said Russia would achieve its military objectives in Ukraine.
