Houthi projectile wounds two, damages mosque in Jazan region, Saudi says

Saudi Civil Defence reported that a projectile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck al-Tuwal in the kingdom’s southern Jazan region on Saturday, injuring two people and causing damage to a mosque, multiple buildings and vehicles. Local responders said emergency procedures were activated after the impact.

A civil defence spokesperson condemned the attack on civilian sites as a clear breach of international humanitarian norms and said precautionary measures had been put in place. Authorities later indicated the danger had passed in the Khamis Mushait governorate following a warning issued to residents there.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement asserted the strike was aimed at a Saudi military base in Sharurah, located in the neighbouring Najran province. The incident comes amid a wave of missile and drone strikes on southern Saudi territory in recent days; separate attacks on Tuesday reportedly wounded 73 people, including women and children, across several cities.

Analysts and officials say the recent strikes form part of a rapid escalation in Yemen’s long-running war, which flared again in July after a United Nations-brokered truce unraveled. Houthi forces have seized Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast, taking control of the port city of Mocha, while Yemeni government forces have opened new fronts in al-Jawf, Marib and al-Bayda. International agencies and local officials report that more than 500 people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced as the fighting intensifies, prompting an emergency session of the UN Security Council and warnings from the UN envoy about a more dangerous phase of the conflict.
