ICE agent shoots and injures man in Austin, officials say

Local officials reported that an ICE officer shot and wounded a man in Austin on Sunday. Representative Greg Casar called for transparency and accountability, asking for release of footage and records and urging that any officer who violated the law be held responsible. Casar also reiterated calls to remove ICE from the city.

State Senator Sarah Eckhardt said the shooting occurred earlier in North Austin and stated the victim had been shot in the back and was in critical condition, while expressing hope for the person’s recovery and demanding a thorough, transparent investigation. Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz told NBC News that the injured man had been hit in the torso and was hospitalized in what Luckritz described as serious but stable condition.

NBC News, citing a law enforcement source and officials, reported the wounded individual is Venezuelan and is not legally in the United States; the outlet additionally said he was facing a final order of removal. The Hill reported it had contacted the Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency, for comment.

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, whose state House district includes parts of Austin, also called for a full, independent investigation and the release of any available footage, saying prior incidents had undermined trust in the agency. Local and federal authorities have not publicly released a complete account of the events, and officials have requested further information and evidence as investigations proceed.
