Microsoft’s new Surface Mouse has haptic feedback and a customizable action button

Microsoft is updating its Surface Mouse for the first time since the model’s 2016 debut, unveiling a second-generation design that adds haptic feedback and a programmable action button. The company says the haptics provide a subtle physical response for interactions such as clicks, drags and alignment events across Windows 11, and the new action button is primarily intended for quick access to Copilot but can be reassigned to other shortcuts via the Surface app.

The haptic system is designed to work with general OS interactions and also triggers in third-party creative and productivity apps, including PowerPoint, Affinity, Concepts and Filmora. Microsoft enabled system-level haptic support in Windows 11 earlier this year, and so far hardware support has appeared mainly from Microsoft and Logitech; Logitech’s MX Master 4 and some Pro-series mice use haptic elements as well.

Beyond the haptic motor and action button, the Surface Mouse has been reshaped for improved comfort and uses a soft-touch material on its top surface. Bluetooth 6.0 support lets the mouse be paired with up to three devices simultaneously. Microsoft also noted that other Surface hardware, such as the upcoming Surface Laptop Ultra, will include haptic-enabled controls like a haptic trackpad.

The new Surface Mouse will go on sale the same day Microsoft refreshes its Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch lines. It carries a $79.99 price and will be offered in black and platinum finishes.
