Netflix is making a Crazy Taxi movie and a Sonic show with ‘edge’

Netflix revealed plans to adapt three Sega game properties into new screen projects: a Crazy Taxi movie, an animated Sonic series aimed at upper pre-school viewers, and a live-action film based on STRANGER THAN HEAVEN from RGG Studio. The company said the Crazy Taxi feature will be the first of the three to arrive, though it has not provided a release date. Crazy Taxi’s adaptation will draw on the franchise’s high-speed, chaotic arcade roots dating back to 1999. Netflix named Dan Gregor and Doug Mand—who worked on the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun—as writers for the film, and listed producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, who are credited as producers of Netflix’s Sonic projects. The new Sonic animated series is being developed by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara and is framed as a high-energy, comedic yet emotionally grounded show for upper pre-school children. Netflix described the series as offering a bit of “edge” and group-oriented wish fulfillment; the streamer already distributes three seasons of the Sonic Prime animated program. STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, from RGG Studio (the developer behind the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series), will be adapted as a live-action film. Netflix’s brief synopsis places the story in early 20th-century Japan and follows a foreigner who rises from destitution to become a feared yakuza figure and entertainment tycoon; further production details remain under wraps.
