OPEC Sees Oil Demand Growth Explode Sixfold in 2027

OPEC’s September Monthly Oil Market Report projects a dramatic acceleration in global oil demand growth next year, forecasting total consumption of 108.19 million barrels per day in 2027 versus 105.84 million bpd in 2026. That implies demand growth of about 2.36 million bpd in 2027 compared with roughly 380,000 bpd this year.

The increase is concentrated in non‑OECD markets. China’s demand is expected to be essentially flat in 2026 at about 16.90 million bpd after a modest 10,000 bpd rise, but OPEC anticipates a 380,000 bpd increase for China in 2027 that would lift consumption to 17.28 million bpd. India’s profile shows a similar pattern: growth of just 60,000 bpd in 2026 followed by a 400,000 bpd jump next year to reach 6.11 million bpd.

OPEC expects OECD demand to contract by 110,000 bpd in 2026 before rebounding by 430,000 bpd in 2027, with gains spread across the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. Overall, non‑OECD countries are forecast to see their combined demand growth accelerate from 490,000 bpd in 2026 to 1.92 million bpd in 2027, with China, India and the rest of Asia contributing nearly 1.2 million bpd of that rise.

Under OPEC’s numbers, crude requirements from countries participating in the Declaration of Cooperation would increase as well, from about 42.2 million bpd in 2026 to roughly 43.9 million bpd in 2027 — an increase OPEC estimates at about 1.6 million bpd. The cartel has repeatedly lowered its 2026 demand‑growth forecasts during the year and is entering 2027 with a demand outlook that is markedly stronger and more concentrated outside the OECD than the picture for 2026.
