Peak XV ups Surge seed investment ceiling to $5M, unveils 18-startup cohort
Peak XV Partners raised the per-company seed investment ceiling for its Surge program to $5 million from $3 million and disclosed a new cohort of 18 startups. The firm said it put more than $50 million into the cohort, which has collectively raised over $90 million in seed capital.

Why It Matters
The larger cheque size reflects rising seed-round costs and a shift toward more capital-intensive, deep-tech startups; it also signals Peak XV's continued commitment to early-stage deals as a primary pipeline for later investments. The cohort's geographic mix underscores a trend where many startups are built in India but target global markets.
Key Facts
- Firm assets under management: $10 billion+
- Surge per-company investment ceiling (new): $5 million
- Surge per-company investment ceiling (previous): $3 million
- Number of companies in Surge 12: 18
- Peak XV invested across the cohort: More than $50 million
Peak XV Partners, a major investor across India and Southeast Asia with more than $10 billion in assets under management, has increased the maximum seed-stage check size for its Surge program to $5 million from $3 million. The announcement accompanies the unveiling of Surge 12, an 18-company cohort that the firm says has collectively raised over $90 million in seed funding. Peak XV reported it invested in excess of $50 million across the new batch, though it did not disclose the cohort's median investment.
According to Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV, the firm is seeing both a higher bar for Series A and more capital-intensive businesses at the seed stage, particularly in deep tech. At least three companies in the newest cohort had earlier raised external capital, in some cases from Peak XV itself. Peak XV also described Surge as its primary route into seed-stage deals and said it typically continues to back companies in later rounds.
Surge 12 reflects a broader geographic mix than earlier cohorts: more than half of the startups are based in India, but only five of the 18 are focused solely on the Indian market. The remaining companies target global customers, spanning cities from San Francisco to Sydney. Since launching in 2019 (when the firm operated as Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia), Surge has backed over 180 startups founded by entrepreneurs of more than 18 nationalities; Peak XV says the program's 10 largest alumni now generate over $1 billion in combined annual revenue.
The cohort includes startups across AI, robotics, space, consumer goods, healthcare, music, and fintech. Examples named by Peak XV include Alma (a personal computing platform), August AI (an AI-plus-physician healthcare platform), Ditto (an AI dating matchmaker), Puralink (autonomous robots for underground pipes), and Reinforce Labs (tools for evaluating and hardening enterprise AI systems). Peak XV said roughly 50% to 60% of a typical Surge cohort are founders coming from operating roles at established technology firms.
