Shopify opens checkout to browser-based AI agents
Shopify has added WebMCP support for checkout flows on merchant sites, allowing browser-based AI agents to read, modify and submit orders with buyer authorization, including via Shop Pay. The company introduced three new WebMCP tools — get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout — to enable agents to inspect and complete checkouts without page scraping.

Why It Matters
This change broadens what browser-based AI shopping agents can do on Shopify storefronts, shifting them from product search and cart assembly to full order placement while preserving structured APIs and disclosure pathways. It also contrasts with some retailers that are blocking AI agents from making purchases on behalf of users.
Key Facts
- Feature added: WebMCP support for checkout (including Shop Pay)
- New tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, complete_checkout
- Purpose: Agents can read checkout screens, update details, and submit transactions with buyer authorization
- Rollout: Rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants
- Related protocols: WebMCP, hosted MCP server, and Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
Shopify has extended WebMCP support to include checkout interactions on merchant sites, enabling browser-based AI agents to finish purchases after receiving buyer authorization. Previously, Shopify’s WebMCP coverage let agents search inventories and add items to carts; the new checkout support allows agents to read the checkout interface, change details such as shipping address or delivery options, and submit orders without relying on screenshots or scraping web pages.
The company released three WebMCP tools to power these capabilities: get_checkout to inspect checkout state, update_checkout to modify checkout fields, and complete_checkout to place an order once the buyer approves. Shopify said these structured APIs are built atop its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to ensure accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements.
Shopify already offers a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for server-to-server agent workflows; WebMCP is the standard aimed at agents operating inside a buyer’s browser. The rollout of checkout support, which includes Shop Pay, is being made available to all eligible merchants, according to Gil Greenberg, Shopify’s staff product manager for agentic commerce, who announced the update on X on September 28, 2026.
Major AI shopping agents such as Muse and Instinct have existing partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce, and Shopify announced an Instinct partnership concurrently with this update. Shopify framed the WebMCP tools as a more reliable and efficient alternative to having agents navigate HTML interfaces designed for human users.
