SMBC Nikko and Nethermind Plan Compliance Hooks for Uniswap Pools
SMBC Nikko and blockchain firm Nethermind have signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base and the Nyx Foundation to develop compliance hooks for Uniswap liquidity pools. The collaboration aims to build a Japan-focused decentralized finance gateway, with a target completion date of mid-2027.

Why It Matters
The agreement brings traditional Japanese financial infrastructure and a prominent blockchain developer into direct collaboration with Uniswap and Base, signaling efforts to make DeFi more accessible and regulatory-aligned in Japan. If implemented, the compliance hooks could influence how centralized institutions interact with automated market makers.
Key Facts
- Parties involved: SMBC Nikko, Nethermind, Uniswap Labs, Base, Nyx Foundation
- Project goal: Develop compliance hooks for Uniswap pools and build a Japan-focused DeFi gateway
- Agreement type: Memorandum of understanding (MOU)
- Target completion: Mid-2027
SMBC Nikko and Nethermind have entered a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base and the Nyx Foundation to create compliance mechanisms for Uniswap liquidity pools and to establish a Japan-focused gateway into decentralized finance. The collaboration bundles a Japanese broker-dealer with a blockchain engineering firm and core protocol and infrastructure organizations from the Ethereum ecosystem.
Under the MOU the partners plan to design “compliance hooks” that can be added to Uniswap pools, intended to enable regulatory and institutional requirements when interacting with automated market makers. The effort is framed as a gateway specifically targeting users and compliance frameworks in Japan.
Uniswap Labs, the development outfit behind the Uniswap protocol, and Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network, are participating alongside the Nyx Foundation, which is also named in the agreement. Nethermind will provide blockchain engineering expertise while SMBC Nikko contributes institutional and regional market knowledge.
The group has set a target date of mid-2027 to complete the Japan-focused gateway. The MOU outlines cooperation and technical development but does not itself change protocol code; further technical and regulatory work will be required to implement any compliance features into live Uniswap pools.
