The streamers are fighting over Halloween

At TIFF this year, four major streamers used the festival to preview horror-leaning series scheduled for release in October. The screenings offered early looks at a variety of approaches to genre television, from literary adaptations to original supernatural mysteries, underscoring the importance of the October window for streaming platforms.

Prime Video’s Carrie, directed by Mike Flanagan, reimagines Stephen King’s novel as a modernized series that shifts much of the bullying into digital spaces. Flanagan — who left Netflix in 2022 after a run of limited-series King adaptations and other prestige horror projects — stretches the story across episodes, allowing more time for teen drama and the lengthy monologues that have become his hallmark. Carrie is set to begin streaming on October 7.

Netflix’s Below arrives the following day, on October 8, with six episodes. The show centers on a small Newfoundland fishing village terrorized by what appears to be an ancient sea creature. The early episodes blend a slow-build sense of dread around the creature’s emergence with family drama led by Josh Hartnett as a fisherman fighting to hold his family together.

Peacock debuted the first episodes of Crystal Lake, a prequel tied to the Friday the 13th franchise that focuses on Pamela Voorhees. Linda Cardellini stars as a single mother whose young son drowns, a backstory that the series expands into tense, sometimes gruesome material; all episodes of Crystal Lake are scheduled to drop on Peacock on October 15. Rounding out the slate is Yaga, a supernatural detective series headed to AMC Plus on October 23, which features Carrie-Anne Moss and Hudson Williams in its cast.

The concentration of these premieres at TIFF reflects broader industry trends: horror continued to perform strongly in 2026, with titles such as Backrooms and Obsession succeeding at the box office and Widow’s Bay earning major Emmy recognition. Streamers appear to be exploiting that momentum by stacking October with high-profile genre releases and using festival platforms to generate early buzz.
