Virat Kohli passes 15,000 ODI runs as India beat West Indies

Virat Kohli became only the second player in men’s one-day international history to reach 15,000 runs, converting the landmark into an unbeaten century as India routed the West Indies by eight wickets in the opening ODI of the three-match series. Kohli remained 139 not out from 88 deliveries, his 86th international century, while Shubman Gill supported with 110 as the pair produced a 151-run partnership that effectively settled the contest. India chased a target of 296, reaching it with 50 overs in hand after Rohit Sharma and Gill added 74 for the opening wicket before Sharma’s dismissal in the 12th over. Gill completed his 10th ODI century with a sweep, then combined with Kohli to take control of the chase; Roston Chase removed Gill late in the innings, but Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 13 off 19 balls helped Kohli finish the job with successive boundaries. The West Indies had been put in to bat and received a strong start from Justin Greaves and John Campbell, who put together a 135-run opening stand. Greaves, dropped on 16, went on to make a maiden ODI century and top-score for the visitors, while Campbell was later dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav in the 20th over. After a middle-phase recovery, West Indies posted 295, helped by Amir Jangoo’s 58 off 43 and resistance from Roston Chase. Kuldeep Yadav returned on his ODI comeback with figures of 4-40 and, along with Prasidh Krishna, stemmed the scoring in the middle overs as West Indies lost four wickets for 22 runs between the 31st and 36th overs. Despite that spell, India’s top order and the Kohli–Gill partnership ensured a comprehensive chase and a 1-0 lead in the series. The milestone arrives shortly after Kohli announced he will retire from India duty following the 2027 50-over World Cup; he has already retired from T20 internationals and Test cricket and now represents India exclusively in the 50-over format.
