Volkswagen replaces ID.4 with all-electric Tiguan

Volkswagen announced it will replace the ID.4 electric crossover with a new model called the ID.Tiguan, a move the company framed as leveraging a more recognizable nameplate to help sell EVs. The ID.Tiguan is set to join VW’s updated electric portfolio — which already includes the ID.Polo and ID.Cross — when it arrives in Europe in early 2027.
VW ended production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga plant in April 2026. The automaker said the ID.4 sold about 950,000 units since 2021 and described the model series as one of its most successful battery-electric ranges. Despite that volume, VW has opted to shift to the Tiguan name, reflecting a belief that familiar model badges can ease consumer acceptance of electric models.
Design specifics for the ID.Tiguan remain covered by camouflage and VW has not released complete details. The company has indicated the new electric Tiguan will keep many of the ID.4’s positive attributes while addressing certain criticisms — notably adding more physical controls that were missing on the ID.4. VW intends to give the interior a look similar to the ID.3 NEO and ID.Polo, which includes physical switches for all four windows and dedicated volume and climate controls.
The ID.Tiguan will use Volkswagen’s Android Automotive-based operating system, which implies the inclusion of an advanced voice assistant functionality. VW did not say whether the new model will adopt the Rivian-developed software and zonal electrical architecture expected on the upcoming low-cost ID.Every1 hatchback. The company confirmed the ID.Tiguan will be offered in the U.S., where the ID.4 had previously been produced, but provided no timetable beyond saying it will arrive "at a later date."
