Volkswagen’s crazy-efficient EV borrows an idea from Slate
Volkswagen revealed a Mission Efficiency prototype electric car that the company says can achieve the equivalent of 323 miles per gallon in ideal conditions. On a 794-mile drive from Wolfsburg to Vienna the near-production prototype was charged once and recorded consumption equal to about 279 MPGe (7.51 kWh per 100 miles).

Why It Matters
The prototype demonstrates efficiency gains well beyond current production EVs — Volkswagen says it’s almost twice as efficient as the Lucid Air Pure — by combining extreme aerodynamics and production hardware, suggesting tangible routes to much lower energy consumption in future EVs. Volkswagen unveiled the Mission Efficiency prototype, a teardrop-shaped electric vehicle designed primarily to minimize energy use. The company reported an idealized equivalent of 323 mpg and ran a 794-mile drive from Wolfsburg to Vienna using the car’s production-derived motor and battery from the ID. Polo; on that single-charge trip the team recorded consumption of 7.51 kWh per 100 miles, which converts to roughly 279 MPGe.
Volkswagen noted that by simple arithmetic the Mission Efficiency’s 54.9-kilowatt-hour battery could yield more than 400 miles of range, though that is not an EPA rating. For comparison, the Lucid Air Pure is listed at 420 miles from an 84-kilowatt-hour pack under EPA testing; Volkswagen says its prototype is almost twice as efficient as that production car.
Much of the efficiency comes from extreme aerodynamic and packaging choices. The car uses a Kammback roofline and a very low frontal area to reach a drag coefficient of 0.158 and a frontal area of 2.08 square meters. Designers also tightened the clearance between wheel arches and tires — a benefit for drag but one that may compromise ride comfort — and kept conventional mirrors instead of cameras for depth perception. Solar cells on the roof and trunk add a limited benefit, about 18 miles on a perfectly flat, sunny route at a steady 42.25 mph (68 kph).
The Mission Efficiency makes other concessions for lightness and low energy use: it’s configured as a 2+2 with rear seats intended for people under about 1.6 meters (5 ft 3 in), and interior touches emphasize weight savings. Following a choice made by EV startup Slate Auto, Volkswagen omitted a built-in infotainment system and speakers, offering a portable Bluetooth speaker instead and assuming drivers will use their own devices. Volkswagen described the car as “near production” but has not committed to building it; the company previously produced 250 examples of the efficiency-minded XL1 a decade ago, which had a starting price of €110,000 in 2013.
