Yamal nets in Spain’s 3-2 comeback win against England in Nations League

Spain rallied from an early deficit to defeat England 3-2 in a Nations League fixture at Wembley on Saturday. The hosts had taken a two-goal lead in the first half through Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane after Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal had opened the scoring following a defensive error by England's Marc Guehi.

Yamal capitalised after Guehi's misplaced pass, curling a shot off the inside of the post to put Spain ahead inside the opening minutes. England responded with an incisive counter that culminated in Gordon finishing a team move in the 36th minute, and they went ahead four minutes later when Kane headed home from a Nico O’Reilly cross that took a deflection off Marc Cucurella.

Early in the second half England were awarded a penalty following a VAR-reviewed foul on Jude Bellingham, but Kane's spot-kick struck the crossbar. Spain took advantage of that miss: substitute Alex Baena levelled on the hour mark after England conceded possession, then created the winner when substitute Mikel Oyarzabal dinked a finish over goalkeeper James Trafford.

The victory extends Spain's unbeaten run to 39 matches, a European record, and marked a frustrating night for England manager Thomas Tuchel, who saw his side make a series of defensive errors. Trafford was preferred in goal to Jordan Pickford for the match, and Barcelona winger Ferran Torres also featured prominently for Spain, having an effort ruled out for offside and seeing another saved.
