Penn Badgley has admitted he let down one of his personal boundaries before filming the final season of You.

Back in 2023, the former Gossip Girl star made headlines when he revealed he is so uncomfortable shooting sex scenes that he’d asked the team behind You to reduce his character’s intimate moments.

“Fidelity in my – in every relationship, and especially my marriage – is important to me,” he said on his podcast Podcrushed.

“And yeah, it just got to a point where I don’t want to do [sex scenes].”

Revealing that “zero” sex scenes would be his preference, he added: “You can’t take [that] aspect out of the DNA of [the show], so ‘how much less can you make it?’ was my question.”

Penn later doubled down on this stance, revealing he even contemplated turning down the role of Joe Goldberg when it was first offered to him because of the show’s more sexualised moments.

However, as those who’ve already seen the latest instalments of You on Netflix will know, Penn had something of a change of heart ahead of season five.

“I had to throw that out the window,” he joked to People magazine in an interview published on Thursday, referring to her character’s more intimate moments.

Penn went on to say that the inclusion of sex scenes in season five presented questions of “what am I willing to do?” before filming got underway.

”As I always said, I said, my desire is that least as possible, but if it’s necessary, that’s the show we all sign up to make,” he recalled.

“So, let’s make sure it’s vital, let’s make sure it’s important, it’s deliberate. And we did.”

You’s fifth season is also the last ever, with Penn admitting to The Guardian that part of him is “glad” to see the back of his character.

It’s a politically intensifying world, and I don’t think this show would make sense starting right now,” he claimed. “It’s ending right now.

“The way this show plays with questions of how we reward bad people, that was a more playful question eight to 10 years ago. It’s not as playful a question now, and it comes with way more stakes, and I’m glad we’re not going to be playing with it any longer.

“And for that reason, I’m really glad it’s ending.”

You is available to stream in full now on Netflix.
