A military criminal court in Aleppo handed down the first verdicts in a trial over last years mass killings in Syrias coastal areas: one defendant received a death sentence, another was sentenced to life imprisonment, a former government soldier was jailed for 20 years, and a fourth defendant was acquitted. The cases stem from accusations first filed in November involving 14 people linked to the violence that killed hundreds in Alawite-majority areas last March.
