A new report from the Basel Action Network (BAN) warns that e-waste tied to the AI expansion has been greatly underestimated and could amount to the equivalent of 23 million 40-foot shipping containers by 2050. By counting not just servers and GPUs but the full data-center infrastructure and related devices, BAN estimates AI-driven hardware retirements between 2025 and 2050 could total 395–617 million metric tons of electronic waste.
