Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has written to UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urging the UK to reopen discussions on the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago instead of transferring control to Mauritius. The Maldivian government says its claim rests on historical links and geographical proximity, and has criticised the UK for not consulting the Maldives before agreeing a deal with Mauritius under the previous British government.
