The European Central Bank has invited e-commerce and mobile-commerce merchants in the euro area to take part in a 12-month pilot of a beta digital euro slated to begin in the second half of 2027. The trial will exercise online and offline payments using a non-legal-tender prototype ahead of a possible 2029 issuance, pending legislation and a Governing Council decision.
