Researchers collaborating through the ECDSA.Fail competition used AI coding agents to shrink a resource benchmark for a quantum circuit that targets secp256k1, the elliptic curve behind Bitcoin and Ethereum signatures. The collective effort reduced the challenge score from 10.75 billion to 1.496 billion, an 86% drop, while the best reported circuit required 1,151 logical qubits and roughly 1.3 million Toffoli gates.
