Chinese firms have surged to dominance in clean-energy technology: by 2026 they hold roughly three-quarters of global clean energy patents, up from about 5% in 2000. Between 2019 and 2025 China invested more in clean energy than the rest of the world combined, and despite U.S. tariffs meant to limit its reach, Chinese solar and battery shipments to the U.S. continue to rise while many exports have shifted toward the Global South.
