The International Energy Agency says global coal consumption is set to reach a record 8.94 billion tons in 2026 after forecasts were revised upward following a disruption to LNG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. Higher gas and LNG prices have driven utilities in major markets to rely more on coal-fired power, the IEA reported in its Coal Mid-Year Update 2026.
