Buganda is a centuries-old kingdom that continues to operate its traditional institutions — led by the Kabaka (king), the Great Lukiiko (kingdom parliament) and the Katikkiro (prime minister) — within the modern Republic of Uganda. Though Buganda claims a distinct territory and population, Uganda’s constitution bars cultural leaders from exercising the state’s administrative, legislative or executive powers.
