Amnesty International has called on Algeria to abandon plans to broaden the death penalty and to refrain from resuming executions after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered arson linked to recent wildfires be made a capital offence. The appeal follows blazes that killed at least 12 people and razed villages in Kabylie and other parts of northeastern Algeria, and comes amid arrests over alleged arson and subversion.
