California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2409, which prohibits state and local public officials from issuing memecoins and bars certain memecoins tied to public officials from being offered to California residents. The law applies to tokens issued on or after Jan. 1, 2027, and adds enforcement mechanisms for state prosecutors; Newsom also signed a separate bill expanding money-laundering rules to cover digital assets.
