Serbian government sets up snap vote with call to dissolve parliament

Serbia's government has announced plans to dissolve parliament and hold snap elections in late October, moving the vote forward by over a year from its originally scheduled December date. The early election is widely interpreted as an attempt by President Aleksandar Vucic to consolidate power amid months of sustained anti-government protests and civil unrest. Vucic's ruling Serbian Progressive Party nominated him to run for prime minister in the upcoming ballot.
