Jamaica is formally petitioning King Charles III to seek legal guidance on slavery reparations, claiming the UK owes approximately $10 billion for centuries of British colonial rule and the enslavement of hundreds of thousands of Africans. The petition marks the first time a Commonwealth nation has used this legal mechanism to pursue reparatory justice, asking the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council to rule on whether enslavement was lawful under English law and whether the UK has a legal obligation to provide remedy.
