Fariba Hashimi, a 23-year-old Afghanistan-born cyclist who fled the country after the Taliban returned to power, won the silver medal in the women’s road race at the Asian Games near Nagoya, Japan. Hashimi, who once trained disguised as a man and now lives and trains in Italy, said the result symbolised resilience for Afghan women.
