Trinidad and Tobago has ended a state of emergency that gave authorities broad powers to detain people without charge after iterations in 2024 and 2025. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the government will not renew the emergency measures and will instead pursue permanent legislation to target violent crime while providing safeguards and oversight.
