Record-high fuel prices and a wider selection of lower-cost electric models have driven battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in the European Union to a new high in 2026, Transport & Environment reported. From January through August BEV deliveries rose about 45% year-on-year to roughly 1.64 million units, and BEVs outpaced gasoline cars over an entire quarter for the first time in Q2 2026.
