Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-backed U.N. Security Council resolution that would have renewed an independent panel to monitor sanctions on Iran, ending the council’s active watchdog mechanism. The move leaves the sanctions regime without its principal source of impartial, evidence-based reporting after sanctions were reimposed in 2025 via a snapback by Britain, France and Germany.
