Turkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the United Nations Security Council to abolish permanent membership and eliminate the veto power held by the five permanent members (US, UK, France, Russia, China), calling the mechanism unjust and obstructive to global peace. The proposal faces steep legal and political hurdles because formally removing the veto would require an amendment to the UN Charter that must be ratified by two-thirds of UN members, including all five permanent members themselves.
