Since the United Nations withdrew its peacekeeping mission MINUSMA from Mali in 2023, the UN’s footprint in the Sahel has shifted from troops to politics, mediation, humanitarian and development work under UNOWAS and other UN agencies. The regional environment has changed as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger left ECOWAS in January 2025 and deepened ties through the Alliance of Sahel States, prioritising sovereignty and strategic autonomy.
