If you were wondering how screenwriter Jack Thorne would follow his global hit series Adolescence, his next project looks set to generate just as much conversation – albeit for different reasons.
On Thursday morning, filming got underway on Jack’s new series Falling, billed as his “first ever love story”.
What’s sure to cause a stir, though, is the fact that the Channel 4 drama centres around a Catholic priest and nun who fall in love with one another, leading both to ask some big questions about their own faith and desires.
Leading the story will be three-time Bafta nominee Keeley Hawes, best known for her work in shows like Line Of Duty and Bodyguard, and Paapa Essiedu, who made a big impression when he starred alongside Michaela Coel in I May Destroy You.
He was also recently in the headlines after being cast as Hogwarts professor Severus Snape in the controversial TV adaptaiton of the Harry Potter novels.

Jack admitted: “I never thought I’d write a love story, but I am very excited to be making one with the brilliant Peter Hoar [the British director of shows like Doctor Who and It’s A Sin].
“We feel so lucky we have persuaded the mighty (and lovely) Keeley Hawes, the brilliant (and also lovely) Paapa Essiedu and the most amazing company of (lovely) actors to come make this with us, The Forge and Channel 4.”
It’s been a busy year for Jack, who also penned the Netflix miniseries Toxic Town, which debuted just weeks before Adolescence became a global hit for the streaming service.

He’s also currently working on a TV adaptation of Lord Of The Flies, as well as a new drama based on the phone-hacking scandal, which will star David Tennant, Robert Carlyle, Toby Jones, Charlie Brooks and Steve Pemberton.
Earlier this week, it was also revealed that Jack will co-write the third instalment in Netflix’s Enola Holmes film series, starring Millie Bobby Brown as the titular detective.
Channel 4 has said that more information about Falling – including when it will air – in “due course”.
