Deutsche Bank awaits regulatory nod to launch institutional crypto custody solutions

Why It Matters

If approved, the move would expand crypto custody options offered by a global systemically important bank under the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets framework, signaling increasing mainstream institutional participation in digital-asset services. The development also comes amid other German banks launching similar custody platforms, suggesting broader adoption by traditional financial institutions.

Deutsche Bank is waiting on regulatory approval to introduce custody services for institutional and corporate clients in Europe, the bank announced. The offering is intended to support Bitcoin, Ether and selected stablecoins initially, with tokenized financial instruments to be added subsequently.

A bank spokesperson, Heinrich Frömsdorf, told Cointelegraph that the institution expects to receive the necessary license in October under the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) rules. Deutsche Bank said it aims to onboard its first clients this year, contingent on completion of the applicable regulatory timeline.

The program follows earlier moves by the bank into digital assets. Deutsche Bank revealed plans for crypto custody in 2023 through a partnership with Taurus after applying for a custody license in Germany, and its head of digital assets, Sabih Behzad, has discussed potential activity in the stablecoin sector, including issuing a token. The launch comes after MiCA reached full enforcement on July 1, a milestone the bank and other institutions expect will accelerate market activity.

Other German lenders have already rolled out similar services: Landesbank Baden-Württemberg began offering institutional custody in April 2024 via a partnership with Bitpanda, and DZ Bank reported receiving BaFin authorization under MiCA in December 2025 to operate its meinKrypto platform. Deutsche Bank is listed by the Financial Stability Board as a Global Systemically Important Bank, underscoring the broader significance of its entry into crypto custody.
