Dogecoin Is Getting Apps as DogeOS Opens Its Public Testnet

DogeOS, built by the MyDoge wallet team, launched a public testnet for an EVM-compatible application layer on Dogecoin on Sept. 30. The testnet uses DOGE for fees, provides a faucet dispensing 42.069 test DOGE per day, and lists several projects building on the layer including a lending protocol, perpetual exchange, stablecoin, prediction market aggregator and game publisher.

Dogecoin Is Getting Apps as DogeOS Opens Its Public Testnet

Why It Matters

If adopted, DogeOS would let developers deploy smart contracts and apps on top of Dogecoin without changing the base chain, potentially expanding utility for a token that has seen large price declines since its ATH. The project also signals renewed developer interest in adding decentralized finance and gaming use cases to the Dogecoin ecosystem.

Key Facts

  • Public testnet launch date: Sept. 30, 2025
  • Testnet fee currency: DOGE (testnet tokens)
  • Testnet faucet amount: 42.069 test DOGE per day
  • Core technology: zkVM-based application layer rollup; EVM-compatible
  • Founding team: Team behind the MyDoge wallet

The DogeOS project opened its public testnet on Sept. 30, offering developers a trial environment to build smart contracts and applications that settle in DOGE. DogeOS is structured as an application-layer rollup on top of the Dogecoin base chain, using a zkVM to produce cryptographic proofs and providing EVM compatibility so tooling and contracts built for Ethereum can run there.

Fees on the testnet are paid in DOGE, and a faucet dispenses 42.069 test DOGE per day to participants. The DogeOS announcement names several teams already developing on the layer: Superposition Finance (a lending protocol), Derps (a perpetual exchange), USDoge (a CDP-style stablecoin), Snag (a prediction market aggregator), and PlaysOut (a publisher planning roughly 15 Doge-themed mini-games by the end of 2025).

Project leadership framed the launch as an attempt to expand Dogecoin's role from a simple ledger into an ecosystem of applications without modifying the base layer. DogeOS founder and CEO Jordan Jefferson said the effort represents the start of Dogecoin's evolution “from asset to ecosystem,” and the Dogecoin Foundation's Timothy Stebbing emphasized preserving base-layer "purity" while adding utility one layer above.

The team previously proposed bringing zero-knowledge proofs to the Dogecoin base layer in July 2025; because Dogecoin lacks formal on-chain governance, changes at that level would require contributor review, community discussion, audits and miner signaling. The DogeOS release does not set a mainnet launch date, leaving open when these testnet applications might move to a live environment with real funds.
