Google is making it easier to switch between password managers on Android

Google announced a new password manager switching experience for Android that removes the need to export credentials as CSV files. Instead of creating and handling CSV exports, users start the migration from their new password manager app and select an option to import or copy data from the previous manager. Android will detect installed manager apps and coordinate the transfer process between them.

During the transfer users can inspect the credentials being moved and must approve the operation through a few taps, according to Google. The system also supports passkeys, so users who rely on that technology will not have to recreate passkeys after switching apps. Google said this approach avoids the security risks associated with storing credentials in an exported CSV file.

At launch the experience is available in Google’s own password manager and with select partner apps. Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane are currently supported, and Google indicated more apps will be added over time. The feature will work on any device running Android 8 or later, widening compatibility to many existing Android phones and tablets.

The streamlined flow is intended to make changing password managers less cumbersome while keeping credential data off intermediate files. Users who plan to move credentials should look for the import or copy option in their new password manager app to initiate the coordinated transfer handled by Android.
