Google’s $899 Googlebook is a bet that you’ll buy a new laptop for Gemini

Google has begun taking preorders for the Googlebook, an AI-native laptop that starts at $899 and aims to bring the company’s Gemini model into the heart of the desktop experience. The devices use an Android-based desktop environment that retains familiar Chrome browser and ChromeOS components, but highlight new AI-driven interactions such as an AI-linked cursor and AI-enhanced dictation. One of the headline features, called Magic Cursor, ties the cursor to Gemini so users can highlight or hover over content for AI actions—for example, asking Gemini to analyze a webpage selection or flag a possibly suspicious email. Google also introduced Rambler, a dictation tool that converts unstructured spoken notes into organized text, plus vibe-coded widgets and integrations labeled Gemini Spark and Gemini Live. Google positions the Googlebook as more than a hardware refresh; the company hopes embedding Gemini into core workflows will entice users to buy new devices rather than access AI through standalone apps or the browser. The company noted that its existing Chromebooks will remain supported, and the Googlebook could be positioned as a future successor for many Chromebook users—an especially important market given Google’s estimate that roughly 50 million Chromebooks are used in K-12 schools. Flagship Googlebooks are being produced by partners including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, and use materials such as aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. Spec highlights provided by Google include up to 2.8K OLED displays, haptic glass trackpads, backlit keyboards, Intel and Qualcomm processors paired with dedicated NPUs, and up to 14 hours of battery life. The $899 purchase includes 12 months of Google AI Pro (with 5TB cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools) plus three months of select services like YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. Google said the devices will receive regular updates for up to 10 years.
