Meta’s Muse is outpacing ChatGPT’s early mobile launch
Market-data firm Apptopia estimates that Meta’s new AI app Muse has outpaced ChatGPT in early mobile adoption: Muse recorded 1.8 million iOS downloads in the U.S. and Canada during its first 12 days versus ChatGPT’s 1.3 million over the same period. Apptopia also reports higher daily active user counts for Muse in the U.S. and on iOS compared with ChatGPT at the same point after launch.

Why It Matters
If Apptopia’s third-party estimates are directionally accurate, Muse’s faster early uptake could signal strong initial market traction for Meta’s AI agent, bolstered by the company’s ability to promote new apps across its large Facebook and Instagram user base. Those dynamics matter because Meta has used cross-promotion successfully with previous launches, which could accelerate Muse’s growth beyond organic discovery.
Key Facts
- Source of estimates: Apptopia (third-party market intelligence)
- Comparison timeframe: First 12 days after each app's mobile debut (U.S. and Canada)
- Muse iOS downloads (U.S. & Canada, first 12 days): 1.8 million
- ChatGPT iOS downloads (U.S. & Canada, first 12 days): 1.3 million
- Muse total installs globally (first 12 days): 2.8 million
Apptopia’s recently released estimates indicate that Meta’s AI app Muse has achieved faster early adoption on mobile than OpenAI’s ChatGPT did after its own mobile launch. Looking only at iOS downloads in the U.S. and Canada during each app’s first 12 days, Apptopia counts 1.8 million installs for Muse compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT. Across both iOS and Android globally, Apptopia reports Muse reached 2.8 million installs in its opening 12 days.
The firm’s user-activity estimates further show higher early engagement for Muse. Apptopia puts Muse’s U.S. daily active users at 642,000 versus 231,000 for ChatGPT at the same point after launch. Narrowing to iOS alone, Apptopia estimates Muse had about 359,000 daily active users, which it says still exceeds ChatGPT’s figures from that launch window.
Apptopia’s data are third-party estimates and not drawn from Meta’s internal analytics; the firm noted it cannot see Meta’s own numbers. Meta has not provided public adoption figures for Muse. Another analytics firm, Appfigures, previously reported Muse had crossed 1 million downloads shortly after launch.
Analysts point to Meta’s established cross-promotion playbook as a potential accelerant for Muse. Apptopia noted that over 95% of Muse users also use Facebook and 63% use Instagram, and the app can integrate with Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Those integrations mirror the heavy internal promotion Meta used for prior launches such as Threads, which reached hundreds of millions of users following its debut.
