TotalEnergies to Bring New Angola Discovery Online in Just Three Months
TotalEnergies said its Acacia-5 well in Block 17, discovered in June 2026 offshore Angola, will start producing within three months via a fast-track tie-in to the nearby Pazflor FPSO. The company expects the find to add about 6,000 barrels per day to Block 17 output and has also agreed to take a 40% operated stake in two additional Lower Congo Basin exploration blocks with Angola’s national concessionaire.
Why It Matters
The rapid development underscores how existing Angolan offshore infrastructure can accelerate production from new discoveries, and it signals renewed capital flow from international majors as they increase exploration activity to help reverse Angola’s production decline. These moves come amid broader industry interest in Angola after the country left OPEC in early 2024.
Key Facts
- Discovery: Acacia-5 in Block 17 (offshore Angola)
- Discovery date: June 2026
- Time to first oil: Three months after discovery
- Development route: Fast-track tie‑in to Pazflor FPSO using available capacity
- Expected production uplift: +6,000 barrels per day in Block 17 (estimated)
TotalEnergies announced that its Acacia-5 discovery in Block 17, made in June 2026, will be brought into production within three months through a fast-track development utilising spare capacity on the nearby Pazflor FPSO. The company said the development is expected to raise oil output from Block 17 by about 6,000 barrels per day.
The Acacia-5 find is the second exploration success for TotalEnergies in Angola this year. Earlier, the company participated in a discovery in Block 0 in the Lower Congo Basin, where it holds a 10% interest alongside operator Chevron. Chevron itself recently reported a new oil and gas condensate discovery in a Block 0 exploration well that could be tied into existing infrastructure.
Separately, TotalEnergies reached agreements with Angola’s concessionaire, Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG), to acquire a 40% operated interest in exploration Blocks 17/25 and 32/21, both located in the Lower Congo Basin. TotalEnergies’ leadership described exploration as a core element of its Angola strategy and pointed to recent investment incentives aimed at encouraging activity in the basin.
Other major international oil companies are also increasing exploration in Angolan waters: ExxonMobil announced a discovery on Block 15 earlier in the week. The return of supermajors to offshore Angola comes as the country seeks to halt and reverse years of falling oil output following its exit from OPEC in early 2024.
