Zelensky to meet with Trump in New York this week

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on social media Sunday that he and U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a meeting in New York City this week after an "important" phone conversation. Zelensky said the two leaders covered many issues during the call and described the planned meeting as potentially consequential, adding that "there is diplomatic momentum."

The timing aligns with Trump's attendance at the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to speak on Tuesday; the president is also due to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday. Zelensky specifically thanked U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for their recent trip to Kyiv, saying they had examined conditions on the ground and discussed the "peace track" as a top priority.

Zelensky listed potential discussion areas including steps toward de-escalation and core security concerns such as energy and food security and protection of civilian life. Earlier this month, Witkoff had expressed confidence that trilateral talks involving U.S. envoys would produce a "good resolution" after their meetings with Ukrainian officials.

The announcement comes as the war in Ukraine approaches its fifth anniversary in February. The Trump administration has emphasized its push to end the conflict during the president's second term, making negotiations and diplomatic engagement a focal point of current U.S. foreign policy attention.
