Cardano joins Solana, XRP Ledger in race to power AI agent payments

Cardano has been integrated into the official x402 software kit, providing the client and server code needed for apps and AI agents to pay for online services with ADA or Cardano-issued tokens. The x402 standard converts the web's seldom-used "402 Payment Required" response into a checkout mechanism embedded within an internet request: a service returns its price and payment instructions, an agent signs the payment, and access is granted once the transaction is verified.

The Cardano addition includes a so-called facilitator component that verifies and submits payments alongside the client and server implementations. The initial Cardano release targets TypeScript developers; the Cardano Foundation said a Python version is planned as the next language option. Engineers started from a specification that was accepted in June before building the supporting software.

x402 was created by Coinbase in 2025 and later contributed to a Linux Foundation-backed organization whose members include payments and cloud infrastructure companies such as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services. Several blockchains — including Solana, the XRP Ledger and multiple Ethereum-compatible networks — already support the standard, and Cardano's inclusion expands the set of networks available to developers.

While the Cardano TypeScript implementation has completed a transaction on a preproduction network, the facilitator has not yet been operated on mainnet and has not demonstrated commercial payments at scale. The update gives developers the tools to enable AI agents to make single, on-demand purchases of data or compute without requiring traditional user accounts, card details or subscriptions, though wider production use remains to be proven.
