Coinbase Wallet Rebrands to Chase 'Anything, Anywhere' Trading as Robinhood Chain Heats Up
Coinbase is renaming the Base App back to Coinbase Wallet as it pivots from a social-first product to a multichain trading platform. Head of product Ryan Kass says the self-custody wallet will act as a testing ground for new assets and experiences across multiple blockchains while Coinbase continues to support the Base network.

Why It Matters
The move signals Coinbase's intent to prioritize broad, cross-chain trading access and to use the wallet as an experimental venue for assets and features that may later reach its retail exchange. It also highlights how competition and shifts between chains, such as activity on Robinhood Chain versus Base, are shaping product strategy.
Key Facts
- Rebrand: Base App will be renamed back to Coinbase Wallet
- Executive: Ryan Kass, head of product at Coinbase, led the shift
- Strategic role: Coinbase Wallet will serve as a 'test kitchen' for new assets and user experiences
- Multichain support: Plans include assets and features across multiple chains, including Solana and Base
- New product features: Support announced for perpetual futures on Hyperliquid and tokenized stocks across chains
Coinbase has decided to restore the Coinbase Wallet name to the app formerly called Base App, marking a shift away from the product's recent social-first direction toward a broader trading focus. According to Ryan Kass, the company's head of product, the rebrand reflects an effort to position the wallet as a place where users can access a wide range of assets regardless of their underlying chain or origin.
Kass described the wallet as a testing environment where new assets and experiences can be introduced outside Coinbase’s main retail exchange. Recent additions cited by Coinbase include perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, support for other networks such as Solana, and tokenized stocks available across multiple chains — all intended to show that the wallet can enable rapid, multichain trading without abandoning Base itself.
The name reversal comes about 14 months after Coinbase unveiled the Base App in Los Angeles in July 2025, a product that had been retooled into an "everything app" combining trading, social features, messaging, AI tools, and creator monetization. Following a reevaluation of that social strategy — and the decision by Base creator Jesse Pollak to step back and refocus on the Base blockchain — Coinbase is shifting the app toward user-driven trading demand rather than prioritizing a specific social model.
Despite the change, Coinbase says it will continue to support the Base network and its communities. Kass also framed the decision against the backdrop of competitive dynamics: activity can rotate between networks (he noted strong interest in Robinhood Chain while pointing to Base’s speed and low fees), and Coinbase Wallet aims to be ready whenever user interest shifts back to Base.
