That initiative has received support from the U.S. Air Force via a $17 million contract with AFWERX. The company’s defense engagement has accelerated through strategic moves including a $500 million cash-and-stock acquisition in August of Resonant Sciences, an Ohio-based firm that makes radio-frequency and sensor systems. Joby also has an agreement with defense contractor L3Harris Technologies to explore development of a gas-turbine hybrid VTOL aircraft capable of autonomous operation. Joby said the cross-country aircraft will return to the West Coast over the next two weeks with scheduled stops in cities including Louisville, Kentucky, and Salt Lake City, Utah.
