OpenAI announced on September 23, 2026 that it is introducing voice-based agentic functionality to its ChatGPT mobile application. The company said Plus and Pro subscribers will be able to use a mobile Work tab to carry out multi-step workflows by voice, including creating documents, drafting emails and summarizing Slack messages. Those paid tiers will also retain access to other Work tab capabilities such as building sites, making presentations, using a cloud browser and accessing finance-related areas within ChatGPT.
For Free and Go users, OpenAI said the mobile update will support plugins and connected apps rather than the full suite of Work tab agent tasks. The company highlighted that voice conversations will produce richer text output and that users can toggle between text and voice input easily. Conversations initiated on mobile can be resumed later on desktop, enabling cross-device continuity.
The mobile rollout follows OpenAI’s July launch of the conversational model GPT-Live and its earlier integration with the desktop app, which enabled voice-driven task completion in the Work tab and app-building in the Codex tab. OpenAI described the mobile release as bringing similar agentic capabilities to smartphones. The company is keeping its chat interface and workspace-style Work tab separate, even as other firms have made different design choices.
The announcement arrives amid a broader shift in which more users are issuing complex commands to AI assistants by voice. The report noted that competitor Anthropic recently made switching between mobile and desktop easier and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces, a different approach from OpenAI’s decision to keep chat and workspaces distinct.
